New hires and promotions
-- Lawrence L. Lawyer II has been hired by ELA Group Inc., an engineering and landscape architecture firm of Lititz and State College, as a senior project manager in its civil/municipal engineering department.
Lawyer is responsible for civil/municipal engineering, storm water management and roadway engineering and will provide engineering support for both office locations.
-- Erik Gangstad recently joined General Cable Corp. as the EH&S coordinator.
Gangstad graduated from Purdue University with a degree in occupational health sciences and another in environmental health sciences.
-- Dr. Francis J. Janton, a sleep medicine specialist/neurologist, has joined the medical staff at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Janton joined the PinnacleHealth Neurosurgery and Neurosciences Institute in 2013. He serves as the medical director of PinnacleHealth's Sleep Lab, and provides care for patients with sleep disorders and neurologic conditions.
Awards and honors
-- Stephen M. Wells was selected as employee of the month for May by Boeing, located in Huntsville, Ala.
Wells was hired as an acoustic engineer after graduating with a master's of science degree in acoustics from Penn State University in May 2013.
He is the son of Sherry and Stephen E. Wells of Altoona.
Course completions and certifications
-- Dr. Linnane Batzel of UPMC Altoona has been recertified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine through 2023.
Batzel, who serves as senior vice president, quality/medical affairs, and chief medical officer, has been named a certified physician executive by the Certifying Commission in Medical Management.
-- Richard M. Serbin of Altoona has been recertified as a civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Serbin, who has been a NBTA member in good standing for 25 years, is part of a growing number of trial attorneys who have illustrated their commitment to bettering the legal profession by successfully completing a rigorous application process and providing the consumer of legal services with an objective measure by which to choose qualified and experienced legal counsel.
-- Ryan M. Granville of Hollidaysburg and Craig K. Stodart of Philipsburg, both of P. Joseph Lehman Inc. Consulting Engineers, Duncansville, have passed the examination by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying for licensure as a professional engineer.
Granville is a civil engineer and Stodart a bridge engineer for the firm.
-- Dr. Nii-Daako P. Darko of UPMC Altoona's Trauma/ Emergency General Surgery has been certified by the American Board of Surgery through December 2024.
He received an osteopathic medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and BiosciencesCollege of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed a general surgery residency at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga.
-- Cheryl McKendree, manager, patient access, recently retired from UPMC Altoona with 26 years of service.
McKendree was hired Oct. 12, 1987, as an admission/outpatient registration clerk.
