Irene G. Hayes, 98, died Saturday in Martinsburg.
She was born in Newfoundland, Canada, daughter of the late Augustus and Lucy Ann (Hodder) Purchase. She was married to James V. Candy from 1937-44, who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and to Donald B. Hayes from 1946-76, who was the chief of police in Bedford, N.Y.
Surviving are two daughters: Carol A. (Peter) Young of Westford, Vt., and Bonita L. (James Andrew) Bloom of Duncansville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Irene was a stenographer/secretary for the town of Bedford, N.Y., for 40 years. She attended Gaines Business School in Manhattan, N.Y., for two years post high school. After the deaths of her parents and husbands, she earned a B.S. in science and arts from Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., in 1989.
A private family service will be held. She will be interred at Bedford Union Cemetery in Bedford, N.Y.
