George R. Thompson, 85, Altoona, passed away Monday at his daughter's home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Eden Hill, Tyrone, son of the late Charles and Laura (Weamer) Thompson. He married Joan Matthew on Feb. 27, 1952, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Andrea (Joseph) Reffner of Hollidaysburg and Cindy (Bob) Gates of Altoona; two sons: Robert (Dona) and Darin, both of Altoona; six grandchildren: Michael (Jennifer) Reffner of Williamsburg, Jennifer Reffner and fiance, Bill Haywood, of White Oak, Stephanie and Nicole Thompson, both of Altoona, Heather (Laramy) Cramer of Coalport and Jessica Gates of Altoona; three great-grandchildren: Anna Cramer of Coalport and Tanner and Ethan Reffner of Williamsburg; and two special children: Peyton and Colt Hileman.
George was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during the Korean conflict, and he retired from Conrail in 1990 as a dispatcher. He was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church and a member of Wehnwood United Methodist Church.
George also belonged to Logan Lodge, F&AM, and the Jaffa Shrine Legion of Honor. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 11, 2014, at Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home, 1520 Fourth St., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Axe and Santella Family Chapel, 1534 Fourth St., Altoona.
In memory of George, donations may be given to Home Nursing Agency Hospice or Jaffa Shrine.
