Donald E. Mentzer, 81, Altoona, died Thursday at Golden LivingCenter-Hillview.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late John and Bernadine Mentzer. He married Dolores M. Zimmerman on June 19, 1954, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife and a brother, John. He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.
Donald joined the U.S. Army when he was 17 years old and later received his GED while in the service. He served four years in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He retired in 2001 as a store manager from Bi-Lo/Riverside Markets after 48 years of service.
Donald was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He enjoyed yard work and working on cars. He was a handyman who could build or fix anything. He also enjoyed dogs and riding his horses with his wife.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. A private committal will be held at the convenience of the family.
