Robert W. Gailey Sr., 88, Cresson, died Sunday at UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh.
He was born in Cresson, son of the late James M. Sr. and Zella (Connacher) Gailey.
Surviving are five children: Mary T. Wivell (Steve) of Cresson, Peggy Broad (James M. Sr.), with whom he resided, Robert Jr. (Mary Ellen Noland) of Cresson, Jean Stich of Cresson and John (Cheryl Boling) of Camp Hill; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six siblings: Clifford of Cresson, James Jr. (Margaret Freidhof) of Lilly, Mary Stohon of Cresson, Betty Shultz of Loretto, Francis (Mary Ann Byrnes) of East Freedom and Catherine Smelley of Lilly; and an uncle, Fred Connacher (Camille) of Cresson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary J. (Illig), on Aug. 27, 1988; and a daughter, Josephine.
Bob was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of WWII. He retired in 1987 from Cresson State School and Hospital as a boiler plant operator with 17 years of service. Prior to that, he had worked in construction and coal mines. He was a member of St. Aloysius Parish and the American Legion, both of Cresson, and AARP.
Bob and his wife loved to travel, hunt and fish. He loved his woodshop and was known for his cabinets, clocks and rocking chairs.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where Legion of Mary will recite the rosary at 3 p.m., followed by a vigil for the deceased. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at St. Aloysius Church, the Very Rev. Father John D. Byrnes as celebrant. Committal will be in the church cemetery with graveside military rites by Cresson American Legion, Sankertown VFW and other local veteran organizations.
