Byrle R. "Hap" Ritchey Jr., 62, Claysburg, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ Thursday at home.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Byrle R. Sr. and Helen (Nycum) Ritchey. He married Priscilla Wirrick on May 9, 1987, in Claysburg.
Surviving are his wife of 27 years; two sons: Joshua and wife, Stevi, of Altoona and Joseph of Claysburg; a grandson, Tandon; a brother, Terry of East Freedom; two sisters: Christine Dell of Claysburg and Leslie McConnell of Altoona; three nieces: Michele, Sherry and Kristi; and six nephews: Justin, Chris, Jon, Aaron, Mike and Matt.
Hap was a 1971 graduate of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind, Pittsburgh. He had been employed as a radio announcer at WJSM since 1985 and was "the voice of the Cove" and absolutely loved his job. He had previously been employed at WVAM and WRAX, and he was affiliated with the Fundamental Broadcasting Network in North Carolina.
Hap was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Altoona, where he served as deacon and ran the sound room and media and trained others to do so. He filled the pulpit at various churches and worked with several pastors in his studio. He was a member of the Amateur Radio Club, and his ham radio call sign was N3LEY.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2014, and 6 until the 7 p.m. funeral service Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Foot of Ten Independent Baptist Church, 1130 Foot of Ten Road, Duncansville, Pastor Gary Dull and others officiating. Interment will be at Claysburg Union Cemetery.
