A Hollidaysburg woman faces charges after police say she stole a ring meant for a charity basket raffle.
Kathy S. Jones, 54, of 145 S. Montgomery St. was arrested Thursday morning after Altoona police responded to 300 Fifth Ave. for a report of a theft, according to police.
It was 10 a.m. when Jones allegedly tried to take a sterling silver blue topaz ring with diamond chips from the Blair/Clearfield Association for the Blind, police said.
Jones allegedly was looking around the office, asked if any of the items were for sale and was told the merchandise was for baskets that were being assembled for a raffle, police noted in an affidavit of probable cause.
An office worker told police she watched as Jones stopped at a basket, cupped the ring in her hand and put it in her purse. When Jones was confronted and told to put the ring back, Jones did, and also offered the office worker $20 not to call police, according to the charges.
Police said Jones admitted taking the ring, one that was worth $400, when questioned by responding officers.
Jones was arraigned Thursday on misdemeanor theft and receiving stolen property charges by Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey Auker. Jones was placed in Blair County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $2,500 bail and is slated to appear Wednesday at Central Court for a preliminary hearing.
