The Blessing of the Conemaugh River will begin with a Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m. Sunday at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 427 First St., East Conemaugh.
The blessing service will be at 10:20 a.m. A procession will form at the church and move along First Street to Main Street to the river. .
The service recalls the 1889 Johnstown Flood with this year being the 125th anniversary of the tragedy.
Father George Johnson, pastor of the parish, said the Conemaugh and its environs have had a great impact on the people of Greater Johnstown, particularily in light of its three floods, 1889, 1936 and 1977.
The blessing asks God to sanctify, protect and preserve the community.
