Palmarino Sabastine "Palmy" Bianconi, 89, Cresson, died Tuesday at home with all his loved ones present after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Cresson, son of the late John and Concetta (Bozzo) Bianconi. He married Margaret M. Cassidy on April 11, 1955.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years; three children: Pamela Latterner and husband, Richard, of Cresson, John and wife, Reine, of Cresson and Charlene at home; five grandchildren: Stephanie, David, John Jr., Joe and Jesse; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his long-loving dog, Buddy; and two great-grand-puppies: Bruiser and Pixie.
He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick; five sisters: Marie, Margaret, Mary, Matilda and Carmella; and four brothers: Orlando, Thomas, Frank and Nick.
Palmy graduated from Cresson Joint High School and attended St. Francis College, Loretto, where he played football and got his nickname, "Blitz." He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII. He had been employed at Crain's Poultry, Gallitzin. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson, a life member of St. Pietro di Roma Italian Society and Cresson Volunteer Fire Company, and a member of Cresson American Legion and Lion's Club.
Palmy loved to go bowling and play football, but most of all, he loved to play 18 holes of golf, rain or shine. He also enjoyed a lucky day at the track or playing slots at the casino.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014, at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where the Legion of Mary will recite the rosary at 3 p.m., followed by a vigil for the deceased. A Cresson Volunteer Fire Company memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at St. Aloysius Church, the Very Rev. Father John D. Byrnes as celebrant. Committal will be in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by Cresson American Legion, Sankertown VFW and other local veteran organizations.
