State Rep. Jerry A. Stern, who is completing his 11th term as state representative from the 80th District, has been named the 2014 recipient of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce's Agricultural Community Excellence Award.
Stern, a Morrisons Cove native, announced in November that he would not seek re-election this year to a 12th term.
"Jerry was selected for his support of agriculture and the agriculture community. He has been the voice of agriculture and supported it over the years," said Stacy Hoover, chamber vice president of events and technology.
The ACE Award was started as a continuation and expansion of the chamber's Farm Family of the Year Award, which started in 1970. It is an effort by the chamber to recognize all facets that make agriculture a primary industry in the county.
Stern said he is honored and humbled to receive the award.
"I look at the past recipients, it was formerly the Farm Family of the Year. They were the ones I looked up to," said Stern, who served eight years on the House Agriculture Committee. "I was not expecting to receive this award. It is humbling to be recognized by the agriculture community in such a manner."
Stern will be honored at the Farm-City Dinner on Nov. 6 at The Park at Morrisons Cove.
Meanwhile, the chamber also announced that Ruth Weaver of Hollidaysburg, a former trust officer with Hollidaysburg Trust Co. and an active volunteer for several area nonprofits will be the 2014 recipient of the George Award.
The George Award, presented annually to a resident of Blair County who has improved the quality of the community through their volunteer efforts, will be presented to Weaver at the June 12 Breakfast Club at The Casino at Lakemont Park.
Weaver, 90, served as treasurer/assistant treasurer for Hollidaysburg Holy Trinity Episcopal Church for 45 years and served for more than 50 years as a designated driver for people in need of transportation for appointments or surgery at UPMC Altoona. She also was instrumental in starting a homeless shelter through the Altoona YMCA while serving on the board, according to her nomination form.
