Jean Marie Cole, 77, Altoona, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday at UPMC Altoona.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Vincent J. and Mildred L. (McGough) Cassidy. She married James A. Cole on Sept. 27, 1958, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, and he preceded her in death on June 25, 2005.
Surviving are three sons: James A. Jr. of Altoona, Michael J. of Santa Fe, N.M., and Joseph W. (Melissa) of Duncansville; a daughter, Lisa M. Cole-Kiser (Steve) of Altoona; 11 grandchildren: Heather, Josh, Cassie, Tony, Autumn, Summer, Christy, Hannah, Lauren, Maura and Kaylee; a great-granddaughter, Jazzmine; three sisters: Frances A. Stratton of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Patricia M. Crum of Altoona and Mary E. Geiyer of Gray, Pa.; a brother, Timothy W. Cassidy of Baltimore, Md.; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by two sisters: Lois Cassidy and Helen J. Young.
Jean was a 1954 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and graduated as a registered nurse in 1958 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a nurse at Mercy Hospital, worked as a private-duty nurse and later retired from Valley View Home. She was a longstanding member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Altoona but had recently attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Jean was a member of the National Association of Catholic Nurses, TOPS 379, Red Hat Society and Christian Mothers' Group and volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. She had a strong faith and love of Jesus. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, reading, shopping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona, by Monsignor Stanley Carson. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
