William F. Neil, 94, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of Hollidaysburg and Johns-town, passed away late Monday evening at the home.
He was born in Johnstown, son of the late Conrad and Ruth (Weaver) Neil. He married Dorothy J. Thomas on Sept. 18, 1946, in Beulah United Methodist Church, Johnstown, and she died Oct. 7, 2013.
Surviving are four children: Larry W. and wife, Diana, of Eckert, Colo., Brian L. and wife, Alyssa, of Sinking Valley, Sharon A. Sharp and husband, Ronald, of Harrisburg and Denise L. Gummo and husband, Ed, of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Kristiana Nold, Kim Eilmann, Jason Sharp, Deawna and Ashley Wyandt and Benjamin and Emily Neil; three great-grandchildren: Zachary and Aulyvia Nold and Sydnee Pratt; and four siblings: Ellsworth of Lititz, Sherwood of Newark, Del., Janet Beam of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Lois Berkstresser of Cleveland, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Kelly.
William served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Unkel Joe's Woodshed in 1985, and prior to that he had worked for the Crane Co. in Duncansville. He was a member of the former Garden Heights United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Men's Brotherhood and church choir. He also belonged to the Hollidaysburg and Cross Keys Golden Age clubs.
William enjoyed woodworking, fishing and gardening.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2014, at Gilden Barton Funeral Home, 1401 Ninth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014, by Pastor Dennis W. Derr. Interment with military honors will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
