Sarah G. Balzano, 87, Dysart, died Sunday at UPMC Altoona.
She was born in Dean, daughter of the late Howard and Julia (Funicelli) Swires.
Surviving are four children: Phil (Cheryl Sutton) of Ashville, Ted (Mary McCloskey) of Gallitzin and twins Sallie Bender (Tim Burkhart) of Carrolltown and Susan Balzano (Jim Risban) of Gallitzin; 11 grandchildren, including a grandson, Greg Shingle, who resided with her; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Daniel (Dottie) of Benton and Tim (Sherry) of Fallentimber.
She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Judi Swires of Dysart and Joyce Swires of Ashville; a brother-in-law, Paul Niebauer of Ebensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, on Jan. 7, 1978; a son-in-law, John Bender; a grandson, Andy Reed; five brothers: Theodore, Thomas, Ralph, Alan and Henry; and two sisters: Margaret Dillon and Marian Niebauer.
Sarah worked at the Ebensburg Center for 15 years and retired in 1987. She enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 22, 2014, at Gibbons Funeral Home, Ashville. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Rev. Joseph Fleming as celebrant. Committal will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Ashville.
