A pair of Penn State Altoona men's volleyball players were recognized for excellent seasons on Friday when the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference posted its 2014 All-Conference Team.
Freshman outside hitter Jacob Byers was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year, and senior middle hitter Dan Roberts of Altoona Area High School was voted second-team All-AMCC.
Byers had a strong freshman campaign for the Lions, finishing fifth in the AMCC in kills (177) and kills per set (2.57) and eighth in hitting percentage (.247). He also ranked second in service aces per set (0.39) and fourth in total aces (27). Byers shared his Newcomer of the Year award with Penn State Behrend's Antonio Vasquez.
Roberts ranked third in the AMCC in kills per set (3.00) and fifth in total kills (177). His hitting percentage of .281 was sixth-best in the conference. Roberts also ranked fourth in the AMCC in digs per set (2.53) and eighth in total digs (149). He contributed 0.75 blocks per set, which was the sixth-highest mark in the conference this season.
The Eastern College Athletic Conference released its 2013-2014 Division III South Region Men's Basketball All-Star Team on Thursday afternoon, and highlighting it was the selection of Penn State Altoona freshman forward Evan Greening as its Rookie of the Year.
The voting was completed by head coaches within the ECAC Division III South Region Men's Basketball membership.
Greening played in 24 of 25 games for Penn State Altoona in his freshman campaign and averaged 31.4 minutes per game. He created new school single season records with 19.4 points per game, 255 total rebounds, 10.6 rebounds per game, and a 57.6 field goal percentage this season.
Nationally, he was ranked second among Division III competition in offensive rebounds with 5.2 per contest. In the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, he was second in points per game, rebounds per game and field goal percentage.
Greening has also garnered recognition as the AMCC Newcomer of the Year and the d3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region Rookie of the Year.
