BEDFORD - A Maryland man faces felony charges a year after a 15-year-old Bedford girl, fearing a possible pregnancy and hoping to obtain emergency contraception, allegedly told hospital staff they'd had sex several times.
Police said Jose Luis Inamagua, 23, of Hagerstown, Md., had sex with the girl during at least two nighttime visits while the girl's mother was at work. He faces four charges each of statutory sexual assault and indecent assault, among other crimes.
Inamagua met the girl in 2012 or 2013 on a dating website, police said in an affidavit. The girl, who allegedly communicated with Inamagua by phone and videochat, claimed she knew he was 20, though he likely would have been 21 or 22 at the time.
In July, Inamagua drove to the girl's Bedford Township home for an evening visit, she told police. They had unprotected sex twice, she said.
Inamagua allegedly drove back for another visit a week later, bringing marijuana and smoking it with the girl between two more sexual encounters, state police said.
The next morning, Inamagua "expressed concern ... that he may have gotten her pregnant," the police affidavit notes. The pair allegedly developed a plan for Inamagua to throw a plastic bag containing an emergency contraceptive pill onto the girl's yard.
The girl allegedly didn't find the bag, however, and her mother soon learned of the pregnancy concerns. On July 22, emergency room staff at UPMC Bedford Memorial reported the girl's story to state police.
State police at Bedford found Inamagua's contact information on the girl's phone and confirmed his identity through a cellphone provider, troopers said. Maryland authorities later apprehended Inamagua and turned him over to their Pennsylvania counterparts, Trooper Dana Martini said Wednesday.
He was held at the Bedford County jail April 7 and released a day later on $50,000 bail, according to court documents. Martini said she isn't aware of any similar charges in Inamagua's past.
A preliminary hearing set for Wednesday was delayed to May 14.
Martini said she doesn't believe the girl became pregnant from the alleged sex.
