Mona R. Halerz, 81, Gallitzin, died Monday at Windber Hospice.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Albert T. and Mary (Tramont) Wilson.
Surviving are three children: Doreen (Tom) Krozel of Gallitzin, Cynthia (Richard) Butterworth of Lake Charles, Ala., and Francis P. II (Laura) of Gallitzin; nine grandchildren: Chris Krozel, Michael Krozel and fiancee, Sarah Mentzer, Tyler (Stacie), Jason (Alacia), Jessica (Joseph), Nicole (Brandon), Lyndal, Andrea (Nathaniel) and Anita (Cole); 12 great-grandchildren: Savannah, Cianna, Tyler, Payton, Cullen, Caleb, Gabriel, Sara, Dominic, Rory, Acacia and Olivia; a brother, Robert Wilson of Pittsburgh; and her dogs: Misty, Tuby, Fuzzie, Buttons and Squeaky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis "Frank," on May 26, 2007; two sisters: Faye Jones and Betty Plummer; and a brother, William Read.
Mona retired from Penn Cambria Middle School as a cook. She was a member of Gallitzin United Methodist Church, the Ladies of the Moose and the Gallitzin American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She loved making friends, telling jokes and her dogs. She loved to hug and thank any soldier she met who was serving our country, and her favorite saying was "I'll be your slave."
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014, and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2014, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St., Gallitzin. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Gallitzin United Methodist Church, the Rev. Roger Johnson officiating. Committal will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Gallitzin.
