Alonzo Lloyd Steele, 87, Martinsburg, went home to be with the Lord early Monday morning at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness.
He was born in Woodbury Township, Bedford County, son of the late Earl H. and Mary E. (Simmons) Steele. He married E. Jane Klepser on March 27, 1949, in Brunswick, Ga.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years; two daughters: Pam Harris and husband, Mike, and Patty Reid and husband, Jeff, both of Martinsburg; a son, Mitchell and wife, Cherie, of rural Martinsburg; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Leon; and two sisters: Ruth Horton and Mary Lois Steele.
Lloyd was a 1945 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg, and also attended a sheet metal educational course at Westinghouse Electric, Pittsburgh, for two years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving from 1945-46 aboard the USS Basilan in the South Pacific Theater, attaining the rank of yeoman third class.
He retired as owner and corporate president of Steele's True Value Hardware and Radio Shack, Martinsburg, in 1995. He began his working career in 1950 as owner/operator of A. Lloyd Steele's Plumbing and Heating, Martinsburg, and he also had formerly built and owned the Cove Car Wash, Roaring Spring.
Lloyd was a member of Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church. He was also a member of D. Merl Tipton VFW Post 43, Martinsburg, member and past president of Martinsburg Booster Association and former member of Martinsburg Municipal Authority for more than 30 years. He served on the Martinsburg Borough Council, Hollidaysburg Trust Co. advisory board for more than 30 years and Hollidaysburg Trust Co. regional advisory board, and he was a member of Iron Masters Country Club, Roaring Spring.
He enjoyed golfing with his wife and friends, spending his winters in Florida, working in the outdoors and spending time and socializing with his family and friends.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, Pastor Brian L. McCall officiating. Interment with full military honors accorded by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be given to Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church.
