James M. Ziegler, 86, Altoona, passed away peacefully Tuesday at UMPC Altoona.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Theodore C. and Anna (Biseli) Ziegler. He married Marjorie A. Short on Sept. 6, 1950.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years; three daughters: Beth Hofer (Bill) of Duncansville, Sharon of Sterling, Va., and Susan Fries (Jon) of Altoona; a son, Jerry of Altoona; three grandchildren: Chris Okpych (Wally), Jim Hofer (Ronna) and Jarrett Ziegler; and a great-granddaughter, Emma.
He was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Jim was a graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and a U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours of duty from 1946-48 and in the Korean conflict from 1950-51. After his discharge, he attended Penn State University and graduated in 1952. He was employed as a clerk at Conrail and a part-time teller at ARC Federal Credit Union. He also served on the ARC Supervisory Committee for many years after his retirement.
A lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Jim volunteered in a variety of capacities at the church. He enjoyed working in the yard and socializing with his friends after morning church services. He appreciated life's simple pleasures like neighborhood Christmas caroling, wearing red to honor St. James the Greater Day and commemorating any occasion with song and celebration. He will be remembered for his devotion to his wife, the love, encouragement and sense of independence he instilled in his family, his jovial nature and his strong belief in church and God.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 511 20th St., Altoona.
The family suggests that contributions be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Arrangements are by The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.
