Grier Gala set for this weekend
The Grier School in Tyrone will hold its eighth annual Gala Workshop/Performance at the Grier School Perfoming Arts Center.
The workshop for students ages 10 to 22 kicks off Tuesday with rehearsals with Crystal Frazier of the Rennie Harris Rhaw Company. This year's opening number is being set in only three rehearsals. It will be a hip-hop piece to Pharell Williams' "Happy."
On Saturday and Sunday, there will be workshop classes with all the invited artistic directors. Guest artists will include Jon Lehrer, Bradley Shelver, Brian Sanders, Greer Reed, Crystal Frazier, Matthew Farmer, Val Suarez, Kiesha Lalama and Nancy Turano. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Student Showcase will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Grier Performing Arts Center. The professional performance will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, which includes such notorieties as Lehrer Dance of Buffalo, N.Y.; Junk from Philadelphia; h2 from Holland, Minn.; Koresh Dance Company of Philadelphia; Kiesha Lalama Choreography of Pittsburgh; Reed Dance of Pittsburgh; Steps Repertory Ensemble of New York City; New Jersey Dance Theatre Ensemble of Wall, N.J.; and Extended Dance Theatre of New York City.
Tickets for the professional performance are $35/cash only. The entire workshop, including a ticket to the Saturday evening professional performance, is $200 per student.

Cambria garden line to open Thursday
EBENSBURG - The Penn State Master Gardeners of Cambria County will answer gardening questions on their "Garden Line" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday at 472-7986, starting this week.
The garden line will continue every Thursday until Sept. 25.
Operation Small Steps benefit is Sunday
In an effort to raise funding and awareness for the upcoming mission of Operation Small Steps, a Coach purse fundraiser will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Jaffa Shrine Center, Altoona.
Tickets are $20. Doors will open at 2 p.m.
Operation Small Steps is a nonprofit medical organization focused on the education and treatment of clubfoot and other orthopedic conditions in underserved areas around the globe.
OSS will travel to continue the treatment and educational programs for the birth defect clubfoot.
Brain injury programs set in area
EBENSBURG - Lisa Cullen, brain injury outreach and support program project coordinator at the The Center for Independent Living will present the program "I Bumped My Head - Big Deal" at 6 p.m. April 23 at Ebensburg Free Public Library, 225 W. Highland Ave. The program will focus on brain injuries and the lasting effects they have.
