June Ferguson of Altoona shared this photo from her collection of Lakemont Park photos. For many years, the veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Spanish War veterans, the Sons of Veterans and the Order of the Red Men staged a “sham battle” on each annual Grand Army Day.?The event included beans served in tin cups and hardtack. This food constituted the main diet of the soldiers in the Civil War. The event was revived several times by united efforts of World War veteran organizations.
