Area girls working toward trips to states

High school girls track and field preview

March 25, 2014
By Scott Franco ( , The Altoona Mirror

Several area girls track and field athletes have a little PIAA state experience under their belts this spring.

The area boasts more than a handful of recognizable names when it comes to track and field stars trying to make a return trip to Seth Grove Stadium at Shippensburg University.

There's Tyrone's Erika Voyzey in the high jump along with Altoona's Hannah Mulhern in the pole vault, along with Central Cambria runners Jackie Bracken and Jordan Hayward. Also hoping for another trip will be Altoona's Abby Wagner, Tyrone's Jordyn Swogger and Bedford's Katie Lippincott and Lauren Diehl, along with Penn Cambria's Megan Wheeler.

Other athletes hoping to punch another ticket to states at districts this year include Chestnut Ridge's Emily Finnegan, Bishop Carroll Catholic's Carrie D'Andrea, Tussey Mountain's Devin Folk, Courtney Rupert, Morgan Lynn and Samantha Coffman, Everett's Shiane Pittman and Tyrone's Jordon Wiser.

Strengths: "We have a fairly large team with a bunch of new and energetic athletes. The contributions from the middle school athletes that are now freshmen should help fill in the huge holes we lost from graduating athletes. Some new faces in the throws and jumps will also help."

Concerns: "We lost our No. 1 performer in almost every event to graduation, and we are a very young team. Lack of time on the track and in the field due to weather is a huge concern, especially in the throwing or jumping events."

Overall outlook: "We are in a rebuilding/transitional phase in our program. We lost a tremendous amount of veteran leadership. With the infusion of a strong freshman class, we are hoping to be competitive within the league and are hoping to have athletes qualify for states."

Concerns: "We lost several letterwinners and have many girls completely new to track."

Overall outlook: "We are very optimistic about obtaining a winning season. The girls are striving for new records and personal bests. We are confident that the young girls will fill any needed positions."

Assistant coaches: Sarah Brambley, Cassie Manelick, Erin Musselman, Alexandra Moore

Coach: Sue Conner

League: Inter-County Conference

Last year's record: 6-7

Strengths: "Strong group of seniors that we're hoping will show great leadership to our younger athletes. We have a large group of freshmen this season that will have junior high experience, which should help us with our depth in events."

Concerns: "Injuries are always a concern, considering the drastic temperature changes we've been dealing with this winter. We haven't been able to fill all the hurdling spots, but if we can get at least two strong hurdlers, we will be better."

Overall outlook: "It would be nice to be one of the top three girls teams in the ICC this season, and we have the potential to get there if we keep everyone healthy. Would like to qualify someone for states again this season."

Strengths: "We have a strong group of returning letterwinners from last year and also a large number of [freshmen] now [sophomores] who stayed with the team. We have a good bit of depth in a number of events that we haven't had before."

Concerns: "As last year, we have a large number of freshmen on the team. The freshmen actually out-number the seniors and juniors combined, so experience is a concern."

Overall outlook: "I look for the girls to have a banner year. I believe that we will have a number of girls in the mix for state berths. I hope that a successful season will also help the younger girls want to strive to match that success."

Concerns: "Some real poor weather days we had to deal with in the preseason, and a few injuries early on which are on the mend."

Overall outlook: "Have seen much improvement over the past weeks. Lots of returning athletes with lots of experience. I would say we will have several athletes qualify for districts and a couple for states as well. Rachel Fleming, Lucia Person and Steph Park are some names to watch for."

Coach: James Rocco, 24th season

League: Heritage Conference

Last year's record: 2-8

Roster: Seniors-Brooke Bernard, Mikaela Gobrecht, Ally Kopera, Martina Leonard, Nessa Myers, Renee Paronish, Sienna Previte, Maura Risbon, Chelsea Brady. Juniors-Melissa Bender, Alyssa Birchall, Adrianna Frontino, Laken Lapso, Brooke Mitchell, Alanah Pavlick, Taleh Smith. Sophomores-Lakyn Birchall, Samantha Kline, Melissa Nealen, Samantha Rocco, Kim Spade, Taylor Strong, Samantha Stumpf, Holly Thomas, Janelle Tubo, Brooke Wolfe.

Strengths: "Our numbers are way up with over 35 girls on the roster. All our distance runners return, led by Ally Kopera and lettermen [Sienna] Previte and [Adrianna] Frontino. Brooke Bernard will hopefully anchor our sprints after a two-year absence. We are looking for leadership in the throws from multi-letterwinners Renee Paronish, Mikaela Gobrecht and Alanah Pavlick."

Concerns: "We have little real experience in most events. Our short and middle distances have a lot of question marks, and we will need some first-year people to step up here. We have a lot of first-year girls who will need to find their event, hopefully quickly."

Overall outlook: "We're definitely in better shape than last year, just on numbers alone and some limited experience. We have more potential contributors this year, and I feel we will improve on our 2-8 record from last year, but the key to the season is for our new people to quickly settle into an event and start scoring some points."

Strengths: "Our team has grown significantly this year. We have almost doubled the size from last year. We have a lot of strong athletes coming from volleyball, soccer and basketball that have not participated in track before."

Concerns: "We lost [state semifinalist] Carly Petney, who graduated, which leaves a gap in our sprinting events and 4x100 relay."

Overall outlook: "We have restructured our coaching staff this year and combined the boys and girls teams for practices and workouts, which I think will help motivate both teams to push each other and perform well as an entire school at meets."

Concerns: "Losing Cheyanne Hutton and Tesha Harned in the distance, Maggie Ferguson in the sprints, Joah Cebrish in hurdles, and Rachel Ward and Cassie Bauman in the throws."

Overall outlook: "We will have a season where everyone will improve from beginning to end and have a little fun along the way."

Strengths: "We have some great individuals that have a chance to make it to the state meet. I feel that Emily Chobany will be strong in javelin, and Olivia McCabe in the long and triple jump will be strong in those areas. Lexi Wozniak in the sprint events also should do well."

Concerns: "Lack of numbers to win dual meets."

Overall outlook: "We should do well in many individual events and will work hard to get ready for the district meet."

Assistant coaches: Lance Hudak, Marty Slanoc, Terry Miller, Cindy Brickley

Overall outlook: "Our group of athletes are working hard on a daily basis to strive towards their goal as well as the team's. The girls 4x400 relay team will try to repeat as District 5 champion."

Strengths: "Experience in sprints, middle and long distance, jumps. Newcomers with experience in hurdles, distance and pole vault."

Concerns: "Young additions with limited experience. Will need to develop skill positions."

Overall outlook: "Last year was our most successful year in program history. We are looking to build on that success. We have a good many experienced, solid performers and a lot of new additions with talent. We will need to develop our younger members, but this team should be able to compete very successfully at the dual and invitational level. We're looking forward to strong performances at the district and state meet."
