Mr. Peter F. "Pete" Special, 87, Bedford Street, Hollidaysburg, died Saturday at his home.
Mr. Special was born in Pittsburgh, son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Swearingen) Special. On June 24, 1994, he married Karen L. (Dunlap) Miller-Special.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Kenneth, husband of Lori Special, Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Kathleen, wife of Steven Gass, Norwich, Conn.; a daughter, Cinde, wife of David Challinor, Plainfield, Conn.; a daughter, Cory, wife of Wayne Asselin, Norwich, Conn.; a daughter, Pamela Adkins, wife of Ronald, Vermillion on the Lake, Ohio; a daughter, Carrie Special; a step-daughter, Tammy (Miller), wife of Thomas Previc, Slickville; a step-daughter, Kelly (Miller), wife of Rob Hamon, Smithfield; a step-son, Michael, husband of Marcia Miller, Luxor; a sister, Martha Special, Terees Mills; a brother, Frank Special, Las Vegas, Nev.; a son-in-law, Carl Minning, Chester, Conn.; and a daughter-in-law, Cathleen Special, Norwich, Conn. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Manning; a son, David Special; a grandson, Matthew Special; and an infant sister, Elizabeth.
Pete was a member of the St. Mathias Lutheran Church in Greensburg. He retired as a master chief petty officer submariner from the U.S. Navy after 27 years of service. Pete was then employed at Penn State University for 18 years as a maintenance supervisor at University Park. While there, he completed two bachelor's degrees - a B.A. in arts and science and a B.A. in agriculture, completing his education at 53 years old.
Pete was a life member of the VFW Post No. 9475 in Potters Mills and a member of the American Legion Post No. 0516 in Hollidaysburg.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at The Church in the Middle of the Block, Fifth Avenue, Altoona.
