John Joseph "Schim" Schimminger, 82, Altoona, died Friday at home.
He was born in Lackawanna, N.Y., son of the late Clair and Pauline Schimminger. He married Elizabeth Ann (Ronan) on Oct. 1, 1955, at St. Leo's Church.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Ronan) Schimminger of Altoona; five daughters: Paula (Michael) Dent of Kensington, Md., Ann (Chris) Olesnevich of Melbourne, Fla., Linda Lairson of Louisville, Ohio, Tess Snyder and Leigh (Shawn) Wesner, all of Altoona; five sons: Steven (Lisa Nye) Schimminger of San Diego, Calif., Mark (Cathy) Schimminger, Matthew Schimminger, Kurt (Christine) Schimminger and John (Nadia) Schimminger, all of Altoona; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Schim worked as a production control supervisor at Veeder Root.
He was a 1949 graduate of Altoona Catholic High and a 1953 graduate of St. Francis College with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He proudly served as a corporal in the United States Army.
Schim attended Saint Francis College on a football scholarship and was named outstanding athlete his senior year. He also played baseball in The City Leagues and semi-pro baseball in Tri-State League.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Our Lady of Lourdes by Father David Rizzo. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
