Ryan Shaun Carruthers, 33, Altoona, died Wednesday evening at UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh, after a courageous battle against a rare blood cancer.
He was born in Altoona, son of John and Tonda (McGregor) Carruthers.
Surviving are his parents of Altoona; his fiancee, Terri Wagner of Altoona; a daughter, Addison; a son, Elijah; Terri's two children: Kionna and Makayla; three brothers: Jason and wife, Kristie, Brett and wife, Heather, and Trey and fiancee, Sarah Freidhof, all of Altoona; his maternal grandparents, Clair and Shirley McGregor of Altoona; his paternal grandmother, Mary "Dolly" Carruthers of Cresson; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, a nephew and cousins. Ryan will be sadly missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Kenneth Carruthers.
Ryan graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1999, where he was a member of the marching band and concert band, and he also graduated from YTI Career Institute. He was a merchandiser for Dr Pepper Snapple Group and attended Trinity Lutheran Church.
Ryan especially loved his family and family gatherings at birthdays, picnics and holidays. He was a huge fan of The Beatles, North Carolina basketball and Penn State football and admired Michael Jordan. He enjoyed playing basketball.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2014, in Stevens Memorial Chapel by Pastor Eli Hess. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.
