Edward F. Barszczowski, 72, Henrietta, rural Martinsburg, passed away Saturday evening at UPMC Altoona.
He was born in Pittsburgh, son of the late Edward John and Constance (Hovanec) Barszczowski. He married Francine M. Reith on April 29, 1961, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Pittsburgh. She passed away on May 17, 2012.
Surviving are four daughters: Linda C. Brown (Ken) of Martinsburg, Noreen F. Brumbaugh (Adam) of State College, Diane C. Miller (Ken) of York and Susan M. Tepsic of rural Martinsburg; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Nancy) of Pittsburgh; and a sister, Judith Weber (John) in Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gregg E., on March 23, 1999.
Ed was a 1960 graduate of South High School, Pittsburgh. He began his working career as a butcher at Joe's Meat Market, Mount Oliver, where he utilized his skills of meat cutting that he learned from his grandfather and uncles. He then was employed as a salesman for Sugardale Meats, Mount Lebanon, until 1975. From 1975 to 1982 he owned and operated Food Rite, Martinsburg, and then Ed's Riverside from 1982 until his retirement in 2013. He was also considered a "gentleman farmer," having enjoyed raising horses, Texas Longhorn cattle and sheep.
Ed was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Roaring Spring, Henrietta Sportsmen's Club and Reining Horse Association. He was a former member of Martinsburg Rotary Club and Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, Station 80.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg, where a vigil for the deceased will be held Tuesday evening. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, with Father Leo A. Lynch officiating. Private inurnment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company.
