My comment on the State of the Union message by President Barack Obama on Jan. 28:
By my estimate, the speech lasted about 76 minutes. I heard significant applause eight times. During the same 76 minutes, I felt 18 times that there was reason enough to be concerned that tears would come to the eyes of people within ear-shot.
For instance, the president said that during the last few years, the stock market has done pretty well. However, this does not mean that all low-class and middle-class Americans have a better quality of life.
