James J. Roland, 65, Altoona, died unexpectedly Sunday evening at UPMC Altoona.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late John E. and Vernita (Strittmatter) Roland. He married Diane L. Leidy on Oct. 12, 1968, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Bellefonte.
Surviving are his wife; seven children: Jamie D. of Elmira, N.Y., Jennifer D. (Brian) Rupnik of Bethlehem, Jason M. (Heather) of Altoona, Joseph P. (Shawna) of Altoona, Justin P. of Mountain Top, Joshua J. (Laine) of Altoona and James J. II (Jessica) of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; and six siblings: Daniel of Boalsburg, Ann Easter of Prescott, Ariz., John Joseph of Phoenix, Ariz., Raymond A. of Bellefonte, Therese M. McIntyre of Prescott, Ariz., and Margaret M. Bathie of Cedaredge, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette M.; and a sister, Mary Agnes Hoover.
Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a van driver for Blair Senior Services, Altoona. He previously was an agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. and worked for Lamar Advertising. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, where he served as a lector and a member of the Charismatic Group and the RICA Team.
Jim was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a life member of the National Rifle Association and an active member of the pro-life movement. He enjoyed his family and church.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 12, 2014, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
