TYRONE - An Altoona woman faces charges after police said she stole a pair of sunglasses from Sheetz just feet away from an on-duty police officer.
Bonnie L. Turiano, 60, of 152 Steinbeiser Lane, allegedly even asked the officer to help her remove the lid to a plastic coffee mug after taking the sunglasses from a rack at Sheetz on Logan Avenue in Tyrone at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 31.
The officer said he had watched Turiano try on sunglasses and noticed she had a pair in her hand when she started to get her coffee, but then moments later noticed she no longer was carrying the sunglasses.
The officer said he notified a Sheetz employee and also looked to see if the sunglasses were on the coffee counter, but they were not, according to police. An employee signaled the officer that she could see the sunglasses in Turiano's purse, and after Turiano walked out of the store, she was confronted, and the sunglasses were recovered, police said.
Turiano told police she forgot to pay for the glasses.
Turiano has a previous retail theft arrest, police noted, and she was charged via a summons. A preliminary hearing is scheduled before Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller on March 4.
