John Calvin "Jack" Peters Sr., 83, Hollidaysburg, died Thursday at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late John Franklin and Mary Martha (Calvin) Peters. He was twice married, first to Helen L. Lusebrink, who died April 5, 1986. He then married Ruth B. Keller on Feb. 20, 1988, in West Chester, Pa.
Surviving are his wife; three children: Attorney John C. Peters Jr. of Altoona, Karen L. Hecht and husband, the Rev. Dr. Mark E., of North East, Pa., and Linda K. Avers and husband, Marc E., of Burke, Va.; three stepdaughters: Judy Abdullah of Atlanta, Ga., and Barbara Clarke and husband, Steven, and Nancy Craven and husband, George, all of West Chester; 17 grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Virginia Jones of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise C. Jones.
Jack was a 1948 graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and attended the University of Pittsburgh. He retired on Dec. 31, 2007, as a casket salesperson at Reynoldsville Casket Co. with more than 50 years of service in the casket industry. He had previously worked for Creamer & Plank Funeral Home, National Casket Co. and Pennsylvania Burial Case Co.
Jack was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg. He was a member of Park Hills Country Club and a past member of the board of directors of the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA. He enjoyed golf and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates baseball fan and Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt football fan.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg, where a vigil for the deceased will held during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, Father Clement Gardner and the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Hecht officiating. Committal rites will be held at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
