TYRONE - Tyrone hosted Tussey Mountain Saturday for a big non-league game, and it was a fight for both teams all the way to the end.
Amanda Stoudnour produced 17 points inside and coupled with a great defensive effort, the Titans topped the Golden Eagles, 46-33.
"That was exactly what we needed," Tussey Mountain coach Todd Gates said of playing a tough team and doing the things needed to win. "We slowed their offense down and really made them work on the offensive end. We weren't giving up any good looks and they had to force shots up late in the game."
The Titans (16-1) have won eight in a row as they held the Eagles to just 11 points in the second half and only two in the fourth quarter. Jordyn Swogger led Tyrone (11-4) with 15 points.
"When we were in transition we were making things happen," Tyrone coach Lucas Rhoades said. "When we slowed down, we struggled in the half court. We couldn't hit shots when needed and turned it over at key times. They run a very good offense and it's tough to battle back when you get down 10."
Tussey Mountain started the game strong and led 7-0 after 2 minutes. Stoudnour was fed the ball on the post and scored eight points in the opening period. The Titans were up 9-1 before taking a 13-6 lead into the second quarter.
Early in the second the Titans were in front, 15-9. Then the Eagles took the momentum, helped by six Titan turnovers, and came back with a 12-0 run. Tyrone led 29-15, and Swogger scored eight points in the period, but a bucket from Stoudnour and a 3-pointer by Breanna Kendrick tied the game 20-20 with 1:22 left in the half. A putback by Courtney Rupert sent the Titans into the locker room with a 23-22 edge.
"That's going to happen come playoff time," Gates said about the run and change of momentum in Tyrone's favor. "We came right through it though."
A basket by Swogger gave the Eagles their last lead of the game at 28-27 with 4:40 left in the third quarter. Tussey Mountain scored the next 11 points, and Tyrone turned the ball over four times. A trey by Finnley Christine with 2 seconds left put the Eagles down seven, 38-31.
Neither team scored in the fourth for almost 3 minutes, and then Stoudnour scored with another inside shot. Tussey Mountain held the ball out front with Kendrick dribbling around any defender that came out after her. A pair of free throws from Rupert and Kendrick made the score 44-31. Tyrone's only basket of the frame came from Swogger with 57 seconds left to play.
Kendrick finished with 12 points and Engle added 10 for Tyrone.
"These are games we need to battle hard and we did for the most part. We have to score more than 33 points though," Rhoades said.
Tussey Mountain is home Monday to play McConnellsburg while Tyrone hosts Bedford.
