Thomas J. Carney, 84, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Altoona, died Tuesday at the home.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Charles and Edna (Moore) Carney. He married Agnes M. McDonnell on Nov. 25, 1950, in Indiana.
Surviving are his wife; two sons: Thomas J. Jr. (Tamami) of Antioch, Calif., and Michael P. of La Mesa, Calif.; three daughters: Janet A. John (Allen), M. Therese McCloskey (Dave) and Karen M. Bacza (Rick), all of Altoona; eight grandchildren: Stephen and James John, Benjamin, Ethan and David McCloskey, Samantha Bacza, and Julian and Reina Carney; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard; a sister, Janet Humm; and a granddaughter, Rebecca McCloskey.
Tom was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Army National Guard veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a manager of the Young Men's Shop. He was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, formerly active in the Boy Scouts, a member of AMBUCS, and a former officer of the Blair County War Veterans Council.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church by Father D. Timothy Grimme. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
