Joseph H. Thomas, 69, Altoona, died unexpectedly Monday at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Mahersal and Nellie (Slaughter) Thomas.
Surviving are Susan Reeseman, his life partner of 35 years; a son, Craig and wife, Nyree, of Glen Burnie, Md.; a daughter, Tonya Jackson and husband, Jessie, of Bowie, Md.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers: Bonnie and wife, Roxie, of Altoona and Aubrey and wife, Diana, in California; three sisters: Rebecca Hatfield and husband, George, of Altoona, Marion Tyler of Altoona and Maxine Kimbrough and husband, Robert, in North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven siblings: Winnona, Gerald, Hazel, Raymond and Roxie Thomas, Jacqueline Fleming and Diane Washington.
Joseph was a graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed chess and fitness exercise.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the noon funeral service Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
