Wilbert Joseph Merrbach, 63, Duncansville, died Sunday at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Meyersdale, son of the late Wilbert J. Sr. and Mary Lee (Showalter) Merrbach.
He is survived by his wife of Altoona; a daughter, Kathy Scipioni and husband, Giulio, of Altoona; a son, Joseph Merrbach and wife, Nicole, of Duncansville; seven grandchildren: Marina and Daniela Scipioni, Avery Merrbach, Tyler and Logyn Heverly, and Amber and Richard Nisewonger Jr.; two brothers: Russell and Kenneth, both in Salisbury; three sisters: Felicia Maust and husband, Mert, of Myersdale, Jenny Kline and husband, Leon, of Salisbury, and Barbara Mischo and husband, David, of Dexter, Mich.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary.
He retired from F.L. Smith Co. as a machinist with more than 30 years of service.
He was a 1968 graduate of Salisbury Elk-Lick High School.
Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, an avid hunter, and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and being outdoors.
He was a member of the Bavarian Hall.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 21, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. with Chaplain Tyler Parry officiating.
