Mary Ellen (Bull) Livingston, 82, Altoona, passed away Sunday in Charlotte, N.C., after a series of strokes.
She was born in Havre de Grace, Md., daughter of the late Jacob Edmund Bull, founder of Steppingstone Museum in Havre de Grace, and the late Henrietta (Boyd) Bull, former managing editor of the Physician's Desk Reference.
Surviving are three children: Caroline (Rivka) Kehaty of New Orleans, La., Meredith A. Ratajczak of Charlotte, N.C., and William E. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mary Ellen graduated from the University of Delaware in 1953 with a B.A. in history. Soon afterward, she married Dr. William Arthur Livingston, who passed on Dec. 26, 1973. For several years, she was manager of F&F Dry Cleaners, and she gave back to the community through volunteer work and helping children learn to read. She was also an active member of the Altoona Junior Women's Club.
She was a talented, award-winning painter of still lifes and had a wide knowledge of culture, the arts and literature. She also had an acute curiosity and love for American, British and ancient Egyptian history, which would have her making frequent trips to the museums and libraries of New York City. An avid collector of fine dolls, she would often handcraft beautiful pieces of clothing and accessories for them.
Mary Ellen was a devoted wife and best friend to her husband. She was a loving and supportive mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother and a loyal and generous friend. She had a warm sense of humor, loved to laugh and was always "making someone's day" with her sincere compliments, praise and appreciation.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, followed by a remembrance ceremony at 4 p.m. Inurnment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
