Richard E. Smith, 82, Duncansville, passed away Tuesday morning at the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg after a brief illness.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Marian G. Smith.
Surviving are two nieces, Kathy McDonald and husband, Joe, and Lori Hetrick, and a sister-in-law, Marian M. Smith, all of Hollidaysburg; a great-niece, Amanda Hetrick of Reading; and a great-nephew, Ryan Hetrick of Barrington, N.J.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Robert E., on Nov. 22, 2011; and a nephew, Steven Hetrick.
Richard was a 1950 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict, and he retired as a lineman from Penelec, Altoona. He served as past commander of the D. Merl Tipton VFW Post 43, Martinsburg.
Richard loved watching all the Pittsburgh sports teams.
At Richard's request, there will be no public viewing. However, a public memorial service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at the committal building at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg, the Rev. Carla Gregory-Beckton officiating.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be given to the Wounded Warrior Project.
