Rita K. Washington, 98, Altoona, formerly of Coupon and Quail Avenue and Hileman Heights, Altoona, died Sunday at Golden LivingCenter-Hillview.
She was born in Coupon, daughter of the late Walter J. and Eleanor (Lauer) Wolf. She was twice married, first to Francis S. Kerns on Aug. 21, 1938; he died March 21, 1972. She then married Leonard Washington in May 1981 in Altoona, and he died in May 2004.
Surviving are a son, Robert W. Kerns in Ohio; two daughters: Frances E. Clatterbuck and Caroyl A. Orner, both of Altoona; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters and was the last of her immediate family.
Rita was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She had worked for Tritex Sportswear and Loungeray as a seamstress and had worked as a manager for several dry cleaning stores. She had volunteered at Altoona Hospital, and she and her husband, Frank, co-founded the Frankstown Township Sportsmen's Association. She enjoyed plastic crafts and crocheting.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Committal will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.
