Miami's Golden out of the running

Al Golden won't be coming back to his alma mater, as the Miami coach said Sunday he isn't a candidate for the Penn State job or any other job.

Golden reportedly had been a top target of the PSU search committee after being interviewed Saturday. But the coach, who played tight end at Penn State and later served as an assistant coach, apparently does not desire a return to Happy Valley.

"There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami," Golden said in a university statement Sunday. "While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position."

With Golden out of the running, Penn State's two leading candidates as of Sunday were Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak, who was just fired by the NFL team. Both coaches were expected to be interviewed Sunday.

While there could be other strong candidates, no other names have been verified by any national media sources covering the search.
