An Altoona-area man faces an attempted murder charge after he allegedly beat his mother around midnight New Year's Eve, leaving her with severe head trauma, state police said.
Police said Matthew James Baldessaro, 30, was arguing with his 55-year-old mother at 121 Rustic Hollow Lane, Tyrone Township, shortly before the new year began. The argument became violent and Baldessaro attacked his mother, leaving her with "severe head and face trauma," police alleged.
Emergency workers rushed the victim to UPMC Altoona before she was transferred to a hospital in Pittsburgh, officers said.
State police troopers arrested Matthew Baldessaro at the scene and charged him with attemped criminal homicide, aggravated assault and other crimes.
He remains in Blair County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail. A preliminary hearing date is not yet listed in online court documents.
Court records show Matthew Baldessaro faced burglary and drug charges in 2008 in Blair County.
