Dr. Salvatore J. "Sam" Corso, 86, of Keystone Villa at Douglassville, passed away at 5:17 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, in his residence.
He was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Joseph and Augusta (Gould) Corso. He was the husband of Anna R. (Recchi) Corso.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters: Connie A. Stewart, wife of Edward A. Stewart of Altoona, Lorraine C. Kline, wife of Michael A. Kline of Shillington and Mary Jo Doyen, wife of Cory S. Doyen of Exeter Township. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Ryan, Brandon, Dustin, Kierstyn, Matthew and Samantha; his great-grandchildren: Jack and Valentina; and a sister, Dolores Zamparo, wife of John Zamparo in Connecticut.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rachel Allen.
He was 1944 graduate of Northeast High School in Philadelphia and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from St. Joseph University in 1948. He later received his Masters and Doctorate degrees in education from Temple University.
Dr. Corso was a member of St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Exeter Township.
He was a teacher in the Philadelphia School District, a principal in the Hatboro-Horsham School District, served as director of elementary education in the Altoona Area School District and served as superintendent of schools in the Exeter School District. Following his retirement, Dr. Corso was an eighth grade teacher at St. Catharine of Siena Regional School in Mt. Penn.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 4975 Boyertown Pike, Exeter Township, the Rev. Monsignor Edward R. Domin as celebrant. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 498 Bellevue Ave. Reading, PA 19605, in memory of Dr. Salvatore J. Corso.
