Joseph I. Aungst Sr., 66, Lakemont, died Saturday at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness.
Joe was born in Altoona, son of the late Blair and Louise (Conrad) Aungst. He married Beverly Amigh on May 21, 1966.
Joe is survived by his wife; a son, Joseph I. Aungst Jr. and wife, Shirl, of Lakemont; a daughter; Natalie A. Smith and husband, Chris; two grandchildren: Dustin and Jillian Smith; a sister, Rebecca Aungst; father-in-law, Wilber F. Amigh; brother-in-law, Buzz Amigh; sister-in-law, Marjorie Ansman, all of Altoona; and an uncle, Glenn Aungst of Hollidaysburg.
Joe was a 1965 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and retired from Norfolk Southern as a stationary engineer in the power plant.
Joe was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Lakemont.
Joe enjoyed going to Atlantic City with his wife and playing blackjack. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and golfing with his son. One of the greatest joys of his life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Blair County Game, Fish and Forestry, where he was a former hunter safety instructor and ran the Labor Day Running Deer Shoots. Joe was also known as an excellent marksman.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Lakemont by Monsignor Michael Becker. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association in Joe's memory.
