Lady Lions cruise to easy victory

December 28, 2013
By Jon Fleck - For the Mirror , The Altoona Mirror

The Altoona girls basketball team has had a frustrating 1-4 start to the season. The Lady Lions got to take out some of that frustration Friday against West Catholic on the girls side of the Altoona Area School District Jaffa Shrine Holiday Classic tournament.

Altoona jumped all over the Lady Burrs from Philadelphia, leading at one point late in the first half 53-2, and went on to an easy 78-14 win at the AAHS Fieldhouse.

"A win is a win. It was a similar situation to the Central Mountain game. The girls went out there and executed," Altoona coach Jill Helsel said.

Altoona downed Central Mountain 81-19 for its only other win of the season.

The Lady Lions play Gateway for the third straight year in the tournament finals today at 12:30. Gateway defeated East Stroudsburg South earlier Friday 49-35.

"Gateway will press us. They'll use a 2-2-1 and 1-2-1 on us," Helsel said. "We've been working on it a lot in practice. It's our weak spot. Everyone knows if you press Altoona you might have a chance to beat us. We need to take what we've done in practice and execute it in a game."

Prior to the championship game, West Catholic and East Stroudsburg South play in the consolation game at 11.

Thirteen of the 14 Lady Lions that played against West Catholic scored at least one basket. Darby Lee had a team-high 14 and freshman Madison Shetrom scored 11. Lauren Donley also scored in double digits with 10 points.

Jocelyn McPhatter led West Catholic with 10 points.

"Altoona's a really disciplined team," West Catholic coach Beulah Osueke said. "They have a lot of height, they anticipated passes well, they were really effective in their press in the first half and they have a really good 3-point shooting team."

Altoona jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Lauren Donley scored five of the points on back-to-back buckets. Ashley Muffie then followed with back-to-back baskets of her own.

The Lady Burrs got on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter but did not score again until late in the half. Altoona scored 39 straight points. Lee entered the game and ripped off 14 points to lead the Lady Lions.

The running clock kicked in at the start of the second half, and Altoona spent the final two quarters passing the ball around in the halfcourt offense to sew up the victory.
