William L. Tremel, 84, Altoona, died peacefully Sunday at the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg after a brief illness.
He was born in Lilly, son of the late Charles and Mary (Galla) Tremel. He married Marie Mattiello on Oct. 22, 1950, in Lilly.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Catherine Ferrero (Joseph) of Cheswick; two sisters: Dory Moschgat of Cresson and Joan Sibis (Frank) of Lilly; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
William was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles (Ann) and James (Joanne); and a sister, Betty Lego (John); and a brother-in-law, Jerry Moschgat.
He was a 1948 graduate of Lilly High School. He was a professional baseball player for the Chicago Cubs, Shreveport Sports (Texas League), Los Angeles and Portland in the Pacific Coast League. He retired in 1991 as a machine operator from SKF after 30 years of service.
William was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church. He was a member of the Major League Alumni and the Lilly Washington Association and was elected to the Cambria County Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
He enjoyed gardening and was a blood donor for more than 40 years.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church by Father Timothy Grimme. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
