Police say an Altoona man who crashed after a high-speed chase through city streets had a 3-year-old in the vehicle and was drunk.
Toryan L. White, 24, of 2701 Washington Ave., second floor, faces two felonies, 10 misdemeanors and 20 traffic violations after he allegedly fled a traffic stop about 3:21 a.m., according to Altoona police.
It started when two officers on patrol attempted to stop White as he drove west on the 100 block of Fourth Avenue because the Mercury SUV that White was driving had no tail lights, police noted in the affidavit of probable cause filed in the case.
White allegedly accelerated the SUV as he turned south onto Second Street and made a series of turns and after White turned onto Fourth Avenue, he blew through several stop signs until police lost sight of the SUV on the 900 block.
After calling off the chase, officers began looking for White's vehicle, ultimately spotting it traveling at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and 17th Street, where police said it almost struck one of the officers' vehicles.
Police picked up the pursuit as White continued along Fourth Avenue, where he allegedly ignored stop signs at nine intersections.
Police said White drove on Union Avenue and ultimately struck a bridge, veered into a stone wall and came to rest on Crescent Road. White allegedly ran into the woods, leaving an injured pregnant woman and her 3-year-old son in the SUV. Police said the woman was bleeding from her nose and the child was not strapped into a car seat, but instead belted into the vehicle with a lap belt. Debris from the wreck, including child safety seats, were strewn up to 100 feet from the SUV, police noted.
The woman and child were taken to UPMC Altoona for treatment, police said.
According to police, the woman told police that White had picked them up at a motel in Greenwood and when police tried to pull him over, she pleaded with him to stop. The woman said she yelled for White to "just stop" throughout the pursuit and reminded him that her son was in the vehicle, but White wouldn't stop to let the two out of the SUV.
"We are going to get away," the man allegedly told the woman. "Don't worry, I got this."
White was arrested a short distance from the accident scene and taken to UPMC Altoona for a blood test, police said. White smelled of alcohol but claimed to only have drank one "shot" about 11:30 p.m., police said.
White was driving on a suspended license and the SUV, which didn't belong to him and was allegedly taken without the owner's permission, had an expired inspection, police noted.
Police said White told officers he didn't stop "because he was tired of dealing with the cops," according to police.
White remains in Blair County Prison in lieu of $35,000 cash bail with a preliminary hearing slated for Dec. 30.
