Joseph B. Collins, 82, Austin, Texas, formerly of Altoona, passed away Saturday.
He was born in Altoona, son of Joseph B. and Florence A. (Himes) Collins.
Surviving are his wife, Joye; five children: Joseph B. III of Bastrop, Texas, Ann Pfahler and Victoria Drobner, both of Altoona, James of Hollidaysburg and Yvonne Wilt of Brigantine, N.J.; a sister, Ann Wessner of Altoona; a sister-in-law, Jeanne of Hollidaysburg; two step-daughters: Rhonda Edison of Anacortes, Wash., and Cindy Foster of Pflugerville, Texas; a daughter-in law, Luisa; and a son-in-law, Gary Pfahler, whom he loved as well; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three nieces; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James.
Joe graduated from Altoona High School in 1950. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a machinist. During the Korean conflict, he served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1951 to January 1955.
Joe received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 and a Master's in secondary education in 1960. He received three National Science Foundation grants: Iowa State University, 1963, University of Nebraska, 1964; and Randolph Macon College, 1965.
Joe retired from the Pennsylvania Public School Employees System in 1986 with 32 years of service. Twenty-five of these years were with the Hollidaysburg school system as a teacher, assistant principal and administrative assistant to the superintendent. He went to work for the federal government in 1990 and retired with 12 years of service with the Internal Revenue Service in Austin, Texas.
A 2 p.m. graveside service will be held today, Dec. 16, 2013, at Bear Creek Cemetery in Bertram, Texas.
