Charles E. Gill, 93, Altoona, died unexpectedly Thursday at UPMC Altoona.
He was born in Newton Hamilton, son of the late Charles E. and Essie (Wharton) Gill. He married Phyllis D. Foreman on Feb. 16, 1948, and she preceded him in death on May 9, 2005.
Surviving are two daughters: Bonnie M. Gill of Altoona and Deborah A. Peterman and husband, Gary, of Hollidaysburg; a grandson, Eric S. Peterman of Chambersburg; two great-grandsons: Nathan and Justin Peterman; a stepbrother, Eugene Bair of Shippensburg; a stepsister, Evelyn Chilcote of Chambersburg; and a sister, Betty Bailey of McVeytown.
Charles was a 1938 graduate of Mount Union High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving with the 45th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for 10 years and then worked for 28 years for the Altoona Police Department, retiring in March 1983. He was awarded the Policemen's Policeman award in 1959.
Charles was a member of Broad Avenue United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the choir and administrative council. He also belonged to Logan Lodge 490, F&AM; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Altoona; Jaffa Shrine; and Mountain City Lodge 8, Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed walking, motoring throughout the states and spending time with his family.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, Pastor James House officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
