Cablan G. "Turk" Azar, DDS, 82, Altoona, died Thursday at Valley View Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Cablan J. and Julia (Matry) Azar.
Surviving are a brother, Joseph of Glenshaw; a nephew, David Azar of Bear, Del.; and two nieces: Susan Azar and husband, Victor Zona, of Northville, Mich., and Lauren Azar of Madison, Wis.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Helen.
Turk was a 1949 graduate of Altoona High School, a 1952 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor of science degree and a 1956 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a doctorate of dentistry science. He practiced dentistry in Altoona for 40 years. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve from 1952-72.
He played basketball at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown from 1949-51, where he was known as "Shazam" or "Shaz" for his jumping ability. He was a member of the Rotary Club from 1963-2005 with 42 years of perfect attendance.
Turk will be remembered for his kindness and generosity in support of local athletics and higher education. His love of dogs, basketball and history and his talent as an artist were apparent to many. His artwork includes the seal for the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry, an oil portrait of his mentor, Dr. Miller, which hangs in the Calvin House, and a carving of Jesus on the cross which hangs in the St. Joseph Church near Altoona.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. in Stevens Memorial Chapel by Tim O'Brien. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mending Hearts Animal Rescue, Blair County Historical Society or the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
