Raymond A. "Ray" Long, 92, The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, died Thursday at the Village after an extended illness.
He was born in Newry, son of Raymond R. and Pearl (Spidle) Long. He married Helen E. Long in Altoona, and she died April 28, 2009.
Surviving are two daughters: Judith Johnston (Robert) of Matthews, N.C., and Connie Weidlich; a son, Dennis (Eileen) of Cranberry Township; seven grandchildren: Lori Hasley, Kristin West, Julie Nastri, Scott Johnston, Jill Boyette, Rae Detwiler and Amy Zeng; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Hess of Duncansville.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Larry and Paul.
Ray was a graduate of Altoona High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from July 31, 1942, to Oct. 15, 1945, aboard the USS Hancock (CV-19) in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a past chairman of the board of Blue and White Bus Lines Inc., past chairman of the Pennsylvania Bus Association and past director of American Bus Association.
Ray was a past potentate of the Jaffa Shrine, past member of the Jaffa Shrine Arab Patrol and Legion of Honor, past Jaffa Shrine Colonel of Units, director of the Royal Order of Jesters in 1974, past president of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Association, member of the DeMolay Legion of Honor, past DeMolay Dad, and member of Mountain Lodge 281, Harrisburg Consistory and Altoona Kiwanis Club.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, Pastor Paula Schmitt officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
