Michael J. "Mickey" Lowey Sr., 83, Altoona, died Wednesday afternoon at his residence.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Anthony Sr. and Mildred A. (Cox) Lowey. He married Janet McClellan on Nov. 3, 2012, after a 23-year courtship.
Surviving are his wife; six children: Toni DePaul-Williams of Kansas City, Mo., Michele Putnam (Roy) of Fayetteville, N.C., John E. (Patricia) of Easton, H. Douglas of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Eileen McEldowney of Altoona and Rene McClellan (Joey) of Frederick, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael J. Jr.; a brother, Anthony Jr.; a granddaughter, Danielle Eckley; and a great-grandson, Cade Eckley.
Mike was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1950-54 on active duty and then serving with the Army National Guard from 1955-90, where he obtained the rank of sergeant with total military service of more than 39 years. He retired as a repairman from Veeder-Root Co. in April 1992 after 36 years of service.
Mike was a life member and past commander eight times of James L. Noble VFW Post 3, where he was instrumental in organizing the Post 3 Band. He was a long-standing member of the Eldorado Kiwanis Club, head groundskeeper for Seitz Field, board member of Altoona Area Teener League Baseball, active with the Miracle League of Blair County, life member of the Bavarian Aid Society and Catholic War Veterans, and a 30-year member of the American Legion.
Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 6, 2013, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, the Rev. Barry Neil officiating. Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park with full military honors.
