Melvin L. "Mel" Ball, 79, Altoona, died Wednesday at home.
He was born in Cambria County, son of the late Vernon and Helen (Riley) Ball. He married Ethel Neff on July 2, 1977, in Altoona, and she died Nov. 8, 2006.
Surviving are three sisters: Linda Stacey and husband, Dick, Louise Farrell and Charlotte Vaughn, all of Altoona; a brother, Ralph and wife, Gloria, of Warren, Mich.; as well as many nieces and nephews, especially his niece, Vivian Erbe, who was his caregiver.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Michael Farrell; and a nephew, Brian Scott Stacey.
Mel served in the U.S. Army from 1957-59, and he retired from McLanahan Corp. in 1996 after 30 years of service. He enjoyed watching football, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Pastor John Collins officiating. Entombment will be in Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
