Shirley Ann Rader, 80, Altoona, passed away Tuesday at home after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late William and Pauline (Leonard) Plummer. She married the late Richard "Dick" Rader on June 23, 1952.
Surviving are seven children: Dennis (Peggy), Donna Fochler, Darlene (Steven) Gority, Douglas (Sallie), Deborah (Rob) Fornwalt-Beiswenger, Delores Rader and Dana Dennis; and 15 grandchildren: Shannon, Ryan, Maggie, Brooke, Justin, Nicholas, Rachael, Blake, Alayna, Richard, Lynsay, Sarah, Drake, Shawney and Melissa. She was great-grandmother ("Gigi") to Gaven, Vallick, Porcelain, Ashton, Mia and Inin.
She is also survived by two sisters: Yvonne "Bonnie" Ryan and Susan Sprankle; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana Sprankle; a grandson, Brenton Rader; four brothers: Richard, Ronald, William and David Rader; and a son-in-law, Jeffry Fornwalt.
Shirley attended Catholic school and was raised in the Catholic faith. She was a nurse's aide on the Altoona Hospital Maternity Ward for many years, retiring in 1995. People would still come up to her and tell her they remembered her from when they had their children. She was truly special.
Shirley was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was very caring and put others first. She was an amazing woman with strength and character and was a joy to all who knew and loved her.
She loved spending time with her family, eating out and watching crime shows. She also enjoyed her many grand-dogs and grand-cats.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 5, 2013, at Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home, 1520 Fourth St., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Axe and Santella Family Chapel, 1534 Fourth St., Altoona, by the Franciscan Friars, T.O.R., of Loretto. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
